Faves of 2003

Here’s my favourites of 2003 in no particular order:

Burnt Sugar – The Rites
Erik Truffaz – Walk of the Giant Turtle
Supersilent – 1-3 (ok, a reissue), 6
Dizzee Rascal – Boy in Da Corner
Nicholas Payton – Sonic Trance
Kraftwerk – Tour De France
Laurent de Wilde – Stories
So – So
Autechre – draft 7.30
Dave Douglas – Freak In
Triosk Meets Jan Jelinek – 1+3+1
Dhafer Youssef – Digital Prophecy
Eyvind Kang – Virginal Co-ordinates
Victor Gama – Pangeios Instrumentos
Matthew Herbert Big Band – Goodbye Swingtime

Astonishing cds?
I heard Supersilent’s 1-3 for the first time this year and it burnt my ears. Nicholas Payton really surprised me. Dhafer Youssef’s earnest, musical yells made me sit up. Victor Gama’s and Eyvind Kang’s patient and expansive progress and So’s mournful pop engulfed by noise and Kraftwerk’s latest, too long-awaited, but brilliant return and Dizzee Rascal’s Public Enemy reinvented in east London, Burnt Sugar’s adding Butch Morris to the psychedelic mix, Matthew Herbert’s sampling political attack on swingband jazz – it’s been a rich and wonderful sonic year which sadly can’t make up for the turn of events in the wider world.
