A little more on Nils Molvaer

James writes further:
Interesting comments on the rhythms – he does utilise them innovatively in certain places but elsewhere it can some across as aimless hijacking.

To which I reply:
Just received in the post today from an Australian eBay vendor – ‘Drum & Bass Selection 2′ on Breakdown Records (came out about ’95) – track 1 on cd 1 is DJ Hype feat. MC GQ’s ‘Rrrroll Da Beats’. I sat and listened through the whole track and was once again amazed at the incredible dynamics, the level of invention and the incredibly alien sounds packed into just over 6 minutes. Problem is (imo) that breakbeat died a death after ’95 (a music devoted to cathartic thrill can’t reinvent itself forever – would go against nature otherwise) and all the invention went into UKG leaving the awful husk of Two Step as pretender to the throne. Others would disagree, but that’s my take on 10+ year old history. The only engaging breakbeat post ’95 was played live as part of jazz ensembles such as Erik Truffaz’s (though the studio albums don’t live up the live experience) and the first Tabla Beat Science album. My suspicion – though I’m probably completely wrong – is that people like DJ Strangefruit are more acquainted with Two Step than its predecessors ‘Ardcore and Jungle.
