On Jungle
Terry (on the Miles mailing list) writes:
… though neither are music I’ve ever internalized. I imagine it’s possible but there just isn’t enough of the direct human element for me – not nearly as much as from Kid Ory’s Sunshine Orchestra with Mutt Carey in 1922 or Van Morrison in the early 70s.
To which I reply:
If you’re looking for everything (mind, guts, heart and soul) then 70s Miles is one of the very few who does it for me. Junglism hits the target on the first two with greater force than most anything else imo. I only know Kid Ory by name, but neither he nor Van dispense the visceral ticket, to me at least. And visceral thrill is important – though not essential – in my book. It’s atavistic, it’s what shakes awake, triggers the grin, gets the cogs working.
