Dan’s response to the Back In Your Town review
Dan writes:
My only (slight) complaint might be that you seem reluctant to criticise. Maybe you had fewer reservations than me, but I do think you were more critical on the night than comes across in the review.
I think the written review reflects what I felt – I did really enjoy the first half though there was a particular point which I described as lacking direction. The second half I enjoyed up to a point but then felt it went on too long.
Perhaps that’s a good thing though? Critics often love vicioualy slagging things off – perhaps to always find the best in your subject matter is a far more valuable thing.
Constructive criticism – perhaps the best, but I’m definitely moving towards avoiding eulogies at all costs. My aim I guess – not reflected in this particular piece of writing – is to actively think about and through what I’m hearing as well as contextualising it, where possible, in a sense larger than the purely musical.
