Various forms of abnegation

  • Cigarettes (I stopped the night of Amy’s birth, after 15 years of smoking mostly rollups, up to 20 a day.)
  • Cheese (A few months ago, after too many bad dreams and a tip from my friend Brett)
  • Alcohol (A few years ago. I stopped enjoying it, not sure I ever really did + couldn’t face a hangover when waking up with Amy or Gabes at 5.30 in the morning. I still occasionally partake in social situations like, er, last night.)
  • Drugs (ever since the kids arrived. Wasn’t really a conscious decision. I intend to return at least to hallucinogens one day.)
  • Meat (20 years and counting)
  • Television (about 6 months ago. I don’t miss it at all. I still watch a lot of films on dvd, but tv? Ugh.)
  • Newspapers (A year or so ago. I occasionally buy the Saturday Guardian, but the majority of news media, probably due to its frequency, strikes me as endemic pornography. The Observer appalls me with its aspirational crap, the others are barely worth mentioning.)
  • Radio. See above for my reaction to rolling news. If I’m around I’ll listen to the Archers, but that’s it.

I feel so much better for giving up these things. Less is very much more for me.
