Idea: develop a really flexible solution to cd storage, patent and market it. This is my pile of recent cds, I’ve run out of shelf space. There’s a similar stack in the kitchen. At some point in the not too distant, they’re going to fall on me – well, I hope it’s me rather than Ames or Gabes.
storage is a pain in the arse, which is why i’ve been gradually transferring old stuff into MP3s and then selling the CDs on e-bay, just to make more space. a lot of stuff is ‘for reference only’, or something u might play once every five years, so why bother letting it take up valuable space when you can store it as data?
You’re evidently one of the new breed Gutter, I’m afraid to say I’m one of the old – I love the visual element of music. I find it easier to select music when presented with a visual (those cd spines are small but rich – typography, colour, texture) rather than a textual interface (letters, words need to be consciously rather than intuitively processed). Having said that, I was toying with the idea of buying a 500gb hard drive plugged into a headless Mac Mini with wireless and an Airtunes or three round the house to provide access to centralised backup, family photos and music controlled via sharing enabled iApps. And then I thought – why not just put the bloody cd on or dig out the photo album or open up the laptop to view things individually. I know I’m (relatively) old fashioned, but there are concerns about the lifetime of home burnt cds and I’ve had more than one hard drive die on me. It’s a stupidly expensive option here in the UK, but I’d rather buy a bigger house (if I could!)
18 months ago I’d have been in complete agreement. I’m 36 now, so it takes me a while to come around to new ideas too! But once you’ve made the initial move, it’s surprising how easy it is to let go of the old ‘touchy-feely’ method of music storage/collection. Having said that, I’ve been buying loads of vinyl again this year! I think maybe I’ve just fallen out of love with CDs a bit. If you need cd-rs of those early Young Gods albums, just send me yer address, mate…
Thanks for the offer Gutter, I may take you up on it, though I’m just bidding on the first YG on eBay – have to see how much higher it goes than £1.99… as to vinyl – you’ve the perfect excuse given that so much Grime isn’t appearing any other way. I kind of hope that legal mp3 downloads will drive cd packaging to be more creative in the line of the Basic Channel tins, the Rune Grammofon digipaks, Raster Noton and Spekk book format die-cut card cases, etc.
Indeed..if every CD came packaged like Raymond Scott’s ‘Manhatten Research Project’anthology, downloads would be dead in the water…

I’ve been writing this blog for quite a lot longer than three years and now I’m finally getting round to writing something in the About page. But what to write?
