Writing about music (zzz)

image of Autechre's Untilted cover

Just went back to check out readers’ responses to my Autechre/Untilted review. In contrast to my Beeb review of their previous album which could more justifiably be regarded as pretentious, I felt this one was relatively straightahead and was the result of a month or more’s reflecting and honing (a rare luxury) before publication.

Boy, does the Buttmeister love his thesaurus. I wonder if he´s a Roget or Merriam-Webster kind of guy.John, Southend
Can we have a non-experimental review next time please. Christ on the proverbial, that was painful.

Paul, Bristol
They say art imitates life. I say Colin B imitates Autechre. As difficult a review to read, as Autechre are to listen to.

loz, london
maybe you should try actually reading the review. it might expand your vocabularies a bit.

Peter
pretentious tosh – and that’s just the review

Sheldon, Essex
It’s funny, in the art world the greater the minimalism the more contrived and nonsensical the review. Colin Buttimer, please remove your head from the rear of your lower torso and write your review again, using plain English.

Rory, London
what an excellent review – I really feel like I’ve heard the album now. Perhaps the reviewer could have used more adult modes of phraseology – I get fed up with sketchy, childlike analysis like this… :)

istvan, budapest
Is some brain-atrophic epidemy going on these days in England? For I haven’t had any problems comprehending this review sitting here in Budapest. Just shut up and keep an eye on your national values (e.g. Autechre), okay?

ellie, aberystwyth
well, concerning the review, it describes autechres music in as much sense as anybody else, and at least the word ‘organic’ isn’t used.

Nick, London
Where did Autechre lose it? And where did this reviewer lose it? Mid-90s Autechre was the perfect balance of beauty and rough edges. This is just cack, as it the review. I’m all for good vocab, but please Mr Butt, everything in moderation. Same goes for Autechre.

No amount of verbosity can describe the heights and depths of this album, but props to Colin Buttimer for this solid attempt.

redstefff, London
Just listen to the tracks posted here and make up your own mind. The reviewer is full of art w**k bullshit…. if we want difficult music to be more popular (and we do…) reviewers need to be helpful not elitist.

G Lagoona – Nottingham
Speak for yourself redstefff (1st review at the top). I found it very helpful and makes me want to try and listen to it.

Nikolas, Athens
I cannot understand why previous posters try to flame the review. I believe the review is “aligned” to the spirit of the album.

Phew!
