   I do, all the time. Problem is they’re short and can therefore steal up on you below your field of vision. It’s tough.

   “Bass, electric guitar and drums are the instruments used.” I love the simplicity of this statement and its phrasing – it sounds strangely formal. And funny, I reckon a lot of music reviews might boil down to saying pretty much the same thing..

   Interesting – how to write a formally exacting review? Might make for an interesting piece – a transliteration from the medium of music to the medium of text. The goal would be to minimise the degree of interpretation as much as possible. Certainly would be a one-off rather than a modus operandi though.

   The old quote could be wheeled out – “writing about music is like…”

   Which old quote is that? The one that goes “writing about music is easier than writing about feelings because you can at least measure, edit and manipulate music with a variety of scientific instruments.”

   I also like the idea of producing a review that would provide all available measurements of a particular piece of music – given in data and graphs with minimal text. Of course such an undertaking would be an egotistical hijack of the original artist’s intentions, but what they hey (hay?)

   “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” I find it a strangely irritating quote actually – and untrue. Or perhaps writing about statements is like painting about er- paint?

   The mensurative review might be fun. You could collate and analyse all sorts of data.

   Attributed to a whole host of different people including Thelonious Monk. How recursive can you go – painting about painting about painting and so on. We should do the mensurative thing someday (nice word btw) – what music would be best? (…)

    I like that moniker a lot. So Mr Milkman are you going to publish such a review if I produce one?? I recall sending you this review, but strangely not hearing any more about it afterwards… (heh heh)
