I finally managed to secure a digital copy of Power Tools’ Strange Meeting as referred to in a previous post. After my brief discussion with Peter I did wonder whether I’d still enjoy it as much as I remembered. I do. It’s a real trio outing with Gibbs’ work on bass a real mixture of melodic and looming. Shannon Jackson’s a delight and it’s particularly good to hear him in this small group setting. Frisell mixes up ethereal with sudden firestorms and hearing him here makes me want to hear his Before We Were Born from I think around the same time. Strange Meeting is a delight throughout.

Brilliant. I just acquired a copy myself. Tracks such as Wadmalaw Island have been haunting me for years! Now I find myself listening to the entire album again and again daily. It really stands up. The other night i was introducing my gf to Marianne Faithful and happened to play ‘Strange Weather’. the guitar sounded like Frisell. His style is unmistakeable though there may be imitators (?). I checked online and indeed he does play on that album and it was released the same year (1987) as Power Tools Strange Meeting. Strange year.

Indeed. I’m not aware of him as a regular guest guitarist in non-improvisational settings. As to the possibility of imitators, I can’t quite imagine it somehow. I don’t know how he plays nowadays as I stopped following him quite a few years ago, but up til that point his mixture of off the wall wildness with sudden passages of gentle nostalgia would seem to me to be pretty inimical to imitation. There’s something almost schizophrenic about his work. He always came across as being a gentle soul, but if you see my later post about YouTube and watch the Naked City video, you’ll witness a classicaly unpredictable, almost unnerving solo. His presence in that band certainly contributed dramatically to the strangeness of that enterprise. Glad to hear from a fellow fan.
