Six albums for a week in a fairly remote place
Off for a week’s holiday with my family to Andalucia, haven’t been there at this time of year before. Found a converted mill in a national park roughly equi-distant from Jerez, Seville and Malaga. 5km upriver from the nearest village. So I wasn’t going to take any music, but it turns out that Is is taking her battered old portable CD player. I have six blank CDRs (don’t want to take originals). What do I choose? After not a great deal of consideration, here’s the list:
- Akira Rabelais, Spellewauerynsherde
- Ali Farka Touré – Niafunke
- Steve Reich – Music for 18 Musicians
- Rhythm & Sound – The Versions
- Scott Walker – Tilt
- Jon Hassell – Possible Musics, Vol. 1
In addition to trying to anticipate what the place will be like by its location and a few small pictures on a website, these choices are also partly influenced by my thinking that it’s going to rain a bit while we’re there, but that it’ll be fairly warm. I wonder how much our musical – or otherwise – choices are determined by the weather…
