Peter - I like 3 a lot, but probably prefer 4 from the first part of the man's career. I can very much picture not clicking with Mr Walker, a bit like either having spiritual faith or not!

Mapsa - with you and Peter championing it, I must revisit. Ornette did work in the quintet/two basses format before in the 60s, would be interesting to compare and contrast the two.

I'm starting to think I dismissed the Ornette disc a bit hastily. When I first heard it, I just thought "live album, nothing new happening here". I've been listening to it since, and it clearly merits further attention. OK, not innovative by Ornette's standards, but are those the right standards to judge it against? Great line up - drummer, two basses, and Ornette playing anything he can get his hands on. Probably one of the most enjoyable jazz records I've heard in some time. Oops.

i was joshing a bit about scott. i like the obvious albums - ("3" is my fave). the more recent ones are way too opaque for the likes of me. i suspect they probably are staggering works of genius (and again, your enthusiasm for them is catching) but i can't find an entry point into them yet. i'll stick with peter hammill for now...

I'll give the Ornette some more attention then (if it's good enough for you, etc). Ms Newsom - Like you I'm suspicious about the lyrics and it's something I've yet to see addressed in a review. I do really like the lengthy compositions, the arrangements and the harp work. Scott - I thought you were a fan. I'm completely sent by Tilt and Climate of Hunter to the point of including them in my 10 artists when I get washed up on that desert island... Sinistri got in contact when I wrote a review for The Wire - I have two or three other albums and a couple of by them in their previous incarnation as the admirably named Starfuckers. Give me a shout if you're interested in hearing any of them. Oh and Timing The 183k Pulse was a very limited release I believe.

just a couple of things - i adore the ornette disc. i wouldn't say it's overrated - that's a term i'd save for ms newsom and mr walker (ahem).

seriously, i've tried with ms newsom but can't seem to find anything of substance there. i've always had the same problem with the incredible string band; vague lyrics that reference celtic mythology and fairy tales etc etc set to equally vague, meandering music. i just don't get scott and never really have, so i can't comment on that one. maybe one day i'll get it; as ever in such cases i'm assuming the problem is mine rather than theirs. maybe i'll find myself eating thse words in a few months!

didn't know there was another sinistri album - still liking the first one...

Mapsadaisical, I'm only well acquainted with about four of Toure's discs, but I'll put Savane at the top of the list to look out for next. Revep's brevity is welcome - increasingly, for my part, less is more... I saw on Last.FM that The Knife were similar to Junior Boys. they're on my list too! The Derek Bailey is a fitting epitaph, I'm assuming you're acquainted with his work in general. The Mat Maneri you must hear if you're at all a fan of Electric Jazz a la 70s Herbie, Miles and their descendants. And thanks for the kind words, I've been enjoying your blog too!

So we only had four in common - Walker, Jelinek, Newsom and Villalobos. Although I swear it would have been five if you had heard Savane.

I thought Revep disappointingly short (although did include Noto's For in my list, which is a bit more substantial), and never really loved the Hot Chip, Various Production (too poppy for me, both of them, like The Knife one that others are raving about) or Ornette records (I totally agree with your assessment of that one BTW). Kantamoinen was another I never really took to, I don't know why. Tortoise's exclusion from my list was probably due to an erratically-applied rule about the exclusion of reissues/compilations - A Lazarus Taxon really reminded me why I used to love them so much.

I haven't heard some of the others - in particular the Derek Bailey one, which given how much I love Blemish, is unforgivable on my part, and the Mat Maneri one I should have got around to by now. Many of the others sound pretty interesting, and I will try to check out as many as I can - I've really enjoyed your blog this year, and have followed up quite a few things based on your recommendations.

Gutta - I was listening to the Warrior Dubz comp today and finally thought I'd check out the tracklisting - there was Andy Stott with a mighty fine piece of driving dark techno/dubstep hybrid. Lovely stuff. I checked the Merciless CD, but on first hearing it didn't do a lot for me - sort of elegant, filmic electronic, not where my head's at, but will give it another listen or two in a bit. I'm really feeling the two T++ 12"s though. Phew.
