Films I wish were available on DVD

Derek Jarman, Caravaggio, a favourite which I haven’t seen for many a year; wonderful, evocative soundtrack awash with the sounds of Venetian rain.
Wim Wenders, the wonderful The American Friend is the exception, but where are Alice In The Cities, Kings Of The Road, Hammett, The State Of Things?
Peter Greenaway, Prospero’s Books…
Brothers Quay, Institute Benjamenta; fetches high prices on eBay for region 1 only release…
Alain Resnais, I own Hiroshima Mon Amour and Last Year In Marienbad, but have never seen the films that succeeded these masterworks and I’d welcome the opportunity…

Hi,

Last Year At Marienbad is certainly available on dvd, from optimum world entertainment. The dvd has a beautiful Renais documentary on the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris as an extra.

BTW, the screenplay by Robbe-Grillet for LYAM is highly recommended too.

Ah, you misread my post Valter – I am the happy owner of both Last Year and Hiroshima. I agree entirely with you – the inclusion on the former of the Bibliothèque Nationale documentary means that DVD holds the honour for me of having by far the best extra of any DVD I own. I usually actively avoid extras such as ‘the making of…’, ‘interview with supporting actor who’s still alive…’, inane ‘director’s commentary’, etc as they almost always dilute the impact of the film. The worst recent experience in this regard is the recent and rather gorgeous BFI collection of short films by the Brothers Quay; I made the mistake of listening to the Quay’s commentary on The Unnameable Little Broom. To my surprise, they proceeded to gradually demistify their oblique and beautiful film in the most dismal way. Perhaps I’m too precious about such things, but I relearnt the lesson once more.
