Music Interfaces

My previous post about iPod cases also appears on another blog I started recently, but haven’t mentioned yet. Music Interfaces is a blog that focuses specifically upon how we access music currently; its main concerns are interfaces, digital music, DRM, online recommendation engines and hardware. As the About page states:

Well, at the time of writing (end of 2006) we have an unparalleled range of media through which we can access and enjoy music – iPods, P2P networks, music playback software, recommendation engines such as Last.FM and Mog. I’m going to start this site small and see how much time I have. For the time being, it’ll be a place to capture and categorise news and links.

I’ve been writing this blog for quite a lot longer than three years and now I’m finally getting round to writing something in the About page. But what to write? Oh well, if you check the category listings you’ll see what I cover. It’s a ragtag assortment of bits and bobs, anything that catches my fancy really. Unsurprisingly, much of that is music. Blimey, you’re setting a nice little industry for yourself with this project. I find it difficult enough to keep up with CDs as it is. The fact that you can turn them into MP3s for your iPod (or any other type obviously) or your computer is great of course as it makes music so much more of a consumable good, and so much more easier to access and enjoy. I often think of how music must have been such a prized thing to experience when you could only be faced with when one could go and see an orchestra play, or when a bard was coming to one’s village. Nowadays, music is so widespread that I can’t help but thinking that it is sometimes used or considered as a commidity.

Music has always been an intergrant part of my life (I suspect it is the same for you), and I still get excited by new music (whether it is actually new, or whether it is just new to me), but do I appreciate it the same as if I could only experience it in very rare occasions?

Bruno, it’s very much that I felt this was a bit of a gap in the market, given the rapid proliferation of formats and web-based information, both dynamic and static.

I agree about its commodification, but I’m very happy about the wealth of music available – it’s a distinct blessing!
