Sad news…

It appears the estimable Bleep43 has it on good authority. Rhythm & Sound’s gig at the former Subterranea was my favourite gig of last year, I danced my socks off and was utterly blown away by the combination of bass, beats and vocals from Paul St Hilaire and another unnamed singer. They’re my second most listened to artist on Last.fm after Kraftwerk. Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus’s partnership, which was responsible both for R&S and the Basic Channel/Chain Reaction ocean of music that preceded it is peerless in its depth and sublime challenge. I did wonder where they would be able to take the music in light of the different formats they’ve delivered as Rhythm & Sound (the one rhythm See Mi Yah project, the echoing rockfall of the debut, the circular statis of Showcase, the vocals version releases of the W/ The Artists). But, to state the obvious, the news of the break-up is deeply unwelcome.

Update: Okay, so I said above that I couldn’t picture what Rhythm and Sound could do next, format-wise. Here’s the answer [120mb]. It’s a live recording that allows in all the madness and ruff unpredictability of a deeply talented singer interacting with their beats and textures. Admittedly this recording is Scion with Tikiman, but it’s not a million miles from my (sublime) experience of them last year.
