Penguin Cafe Orchestra: Simon Jeffes tribute concert

On the left, in the picture above, is Annie Whitehead, on the right Neil Rennie and second from right, smiling over the piano and sat next to Stephen Fletcher is Arthur Jeffes, son of the late, great composer Simon Jeffes. Jeffes senior was chief instigator, composer and theorist of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. He died 10 years ago this week of a brain tumour. I’ve written previously about PCO’s music and Jeffes’ posthumous ly released solo piano album here. The concert I attended with my friend Tim was the middle of three nights (the third added due to popular demand). It took place in the entirely appropriate venue of the Union Chapel, lots of tea lights flickering around the balcony and a hushed, quietly enthusiastic audience in attendance. It was a delight. The music was characteristically generous, wise, full of wit and openness. The world became a poorer place when Simon Jeffes left it, but thank you for your gifts.
