Three recent films
This post to remind myself of three tremendously moving, thrilling, wonderful films seen recently:

Times and Winds
dir. Reha Erdem
2006, only released here recently, Turkey
The last time I was so moved by a film was Jesus of Montreal more than 20 years ago. A film about children in a remote Turkish village whose subject is humanity as a whole. Seen at the Renoir.
Linha de Passe
dir. Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas
2008, Brazil
Movie website
Four brothers and their mother growing up in poverty in Sao Paulo, the lack of opportunity and injustice. Tremendously real, much greater degree of challenge than the Motorcycle Diaries. Very moving. Seen at the Rio.

Underground
dir. Emir Kusturica
1995 former Yugoslavia
Why has it taken me so long to see this film? It’s a passionate, tragic, courageous and tremendously imaginative work of art. Seen on DVD.
