Haven't heard the Fennesz/Dafeldecker/Brandlmayer, I recall seeing mentions of it when it was released, but heard nothing more, will try to check it out. I'm a big fan of Patton and Ellington. I wonder whether it's an age thing - I'm listening more to older music than new stuff now, there's just so much tremendous music to hear. I also find myself listening to less, but playing it repeatedly - witness my listening to Steve Tibbetts 2000+ times in the last 6 months.

My daughter - like her old dad - loves the first two Human League albums. We sing along to them as bed-time songs!

there were quite a few things i loved this year, from the uhtnanks to fennesz dafeldecker and brandlmayr (which seems to have been universally ignored boo hiss). i'm moved to check out the monolake and loved the moritz von oswald. glad to see you're listening to jimmy guiffre - those three albums are so beautiful. i suppose most of my listening is old stuff, though i find myself going back further than ever = current interests include charlie patton, slim gaillard, washboard sam, duke ellington (blanton/webster era) and webern. and i rediscovered early human league too...sorry to waffle, and we must discuss tibbetts soon!

Hardformat has a place on my favourites bar, and it's great to see "Begone Dull Care" acknowledged here. Don't know why everyone turned their backs on the Junior Boys after this release. I'm still enjoying it. whatever. Great site: discerning taste. Have a great year. Cheers.

Niall - let me know if you do get into the Junior Boys, as I said I really do think it's a subtle pop masterpiece that wields remarkable emotion. Will check your other recs too, many thanks.

Justin, I'd not even heard of DJ Sprinkles - just found out it's a Terre Thaemlitz alias. Definitely need to give it and the others you mention a listen. Thanks!

I was rather chuffed to see Resident Advisor went with an album I had already decided as my years favourite as well; DJ Sprinkles - Midtown 120 Blues. Beautiful deep house in a year that has been rather mundane.

Other albums worth a mention for me that you haven't listed are Shitmat - one Foot In The Rave, Sven Weisemann - Xine, Yagya - Rigning and Rob Sparx - Trooper

Interesting and well thought out list. I'm with you on Martyn – Great Lengths, Shackleton – 3 EPs, Zomby – One Foot In Front of the Other & 2562 – Unbalance.

What I take away is I need to give Junior Boys – Begone Dull Care another listen.

What's missing? Harmonic 313-When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence seems like a serious omission imho.

Albums that you might like (But maybe not love) worriedaboutsatan, Subway, Boxcutter & Nosaj Thing

As a footnote to this post, I stick with my three 'enduring' choices from 2008. The only things I continue to actively listen to are Arve Henriksen's Cartography, Autechre's Quaristice, Byetone, Morgan Geist, Skyphone, snd, The Bug and Jazzanova. Those last two I listed as disappointing, but I've changed my mind!
